HealthTalks was first conceived by Professor Carla Teixeira Lopes and I accepted the challenge of developing it as my master thesis project under her supervision, shaping it with my own ideas over several months of development. It is an Android mobile app that records a physician's speech, transcribes it, finds the medical terms used in the transcription and gives definitions for each of them. Its development was accompanied by several different research studies, including inquiring more than 1200 patients in Porto about their relationship with physicians and personal information management habits. After completing my thesis, I kept developing this project in INESC TEC, in Porto, where I continued to work under the supervision of Professor Carla and along two master students who implemented new features in the app. More information about the project can be found here and my master thesis can be consulted in its entirety in English here.
It's very difficult to get information about the ecological impact of most of the choices we make in our everyday life, and in particular about what we eat.
ShapeMeal was designed to be a system that aims to provide diners and other stakeholders of student and employee restaurants easy access to the Life Cycle Assessments of the offered dishes and their total carbon footprint, among other useful information.
The developed work can be found here.
Biomedical information is becoming increasingly easier to obtain thanks to wearable technology and cheaper devices, but the software that comes with each single equipment is incompatible with all others. To solve that, INOVA+ asked us to build a framework capable of reading, analysing and displaying the information from any compatible biomedical device. That framework, BrainLight, is also an end-user solution. We also developed a proof of concept, BrainStream, that employs the framework’s functionalities to allow a physician to check the real-time and past signals of a patient. I was team leader and project manager for this project, leading the development team and connecting it with the other teams and the company. I was the speaker at the final presentation, which you can watch in Portuguese here.
Caravela is intended to be an online platform for English speakers to learn Portuguese, in which the parallels between caravela, a fast and agile ship invented by the Portuguese, and the learning of the language with the use of the platform are highlighted.
Only a prototype is complete, but eventually the goal would be to test it with foreign students residing in Portugal, and later as a learning tool for schools and universities to help their students.
The prototype can be seen here.
GoDex is a Pokédex™ specifically made for PokémonGO™ players with Android devices: it only shows the information that is relevant to those players, and has specific information that most other databases don't have. It works entirely offline so that users don't have to choose between playing more PokémonGO™ or consulting GoDex when they are low on mobile data.
This app was developed by myself and a friend in our free time. The project page can be seen here.
Various attempts at creating a logo for myself. All iterations are different takes on the letters "J" and "M" together.
Have a burning question to ask? Just AskIt!
AskIt is a forum where a logged-in user can ask whatever question they wish, and both the questions and their answers can be scored 1 or -1. Tags make it easier for a user to find the questions they're looking for, and the ability to comment enables a healthy discussion on potential solutions.
Explanation of how the AskIt platform works.

Aalto Innovation Lab
Aalto students have the tools, methodologies, and mindset to go about solving all kinds of problems they face through design thinking, rapid prototyping, and experimenting. However, the teaching of those methods is locked away for non-students.
Aalto Inovation Lab would organise structured, hackathon-style design thinking workshops that bring together different kinds of people to co-create solutions for all kinds of problems.
WeTalk is a platform where people from all over the world come together and learn from each other. The main goal is to brush up on a language they already have some grasp on, but the contact with so many diverse people may lead to some more learning on its own. The discussion topics are always different and are broad and universal.
Freedom of Expression
Created in 2009 for a Human Rights project at school.
BuyMore relies on community input to gather information about the prices of all kinds of products that sell in supermarkets. Those are organised in categories and subcategories, and can be browsed by anyone. Then any user can check the products that they want and check where they're cheaper.
There are fiscal benefits for companies that recruit people with disabilities, but those people are usually ignored either because of ignorance or lack of proper ways to present themselves to potential employers. That is where the platform inclusivIN comes in: it gives relevant information to the companies while working as a recruitment platform as well. It is adapted to work for people with several different kinds of disability. In this project I worked as surrogate product owner, being in close contact with Pari Passu, the civic and social organisation that presented us with the opportunity of developing this project. I was the person responsible for the mockups and general interface of the website, as well as our corporate identity and logo. I worked in the front-end aspect of the solution and presented the developed product at the end of the semester.
TravelVenture is a platform where anyone can share lesser known places to visit, be it natural landscapes or traditional alleys. It uses gamification to drive the most adventurous explorers, and its revenue comes from partnerships with local hosting or entertainment businesses.
Developed in my free time for an academic project, but ended up not being used due to changes to the project's name. "Heróis Reais" means real heroes, and the logo is supposed to be the letters "H" and "R" in a Superman-esque shape.
One of the biggest difficulties Porto's Tourism Association faces is measuring the levels of tourist happiness, due to the lack of effective methods to do it.
TravelStat is a concept for an app that each tourist is incentivized to download and answer to one simple question for each monument they visit. The data is then sent to each particular monument, and the aggregate information is sent to the Tourism Association, which can then understand trends and characteristics of the tourists in their city.
Brochure to explain the project inclusivIN; it is supposed to be tri-folded after printing, and the braille dots should be pressed against with a blunt thin object to become readable.
Promotional video for the project inclusivIN (in Portuguese).

OptiCon is a solution to reach a higher effective thermal comfort level at home with the least amount of energy, offering personalised options according to the owner's preferences and the structural characteristics of their house. It uses communication standards and is a modular device in order to be adaptable to different brands of equipment, which would then communicate with the main hub.
